Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals

Slovenia's manufacturers of pharmaceutical and chemical products are the country's most successful companies thanks to a long tradition of chemical industry in this part of Europe, dating back to the first half of the 19th century when soap, paints, spirit and various chemicals were produced. Currently, knowledge and skill of over 27.000 employees in around 850 companies make Slovenia's manufacturers of pharmaceutical products highly successful in key export markets.

As the country's healthcare markets have matured, they are now experiencing slower growth rates. Nevertheless, Slovenia's per capita pharmaceutical expenditure (€318 in 2015) is expected to continue to offer commercial oppurtunities for drugmakers, in conjunction with a high standard healthcare.

Slovenia's public health expenditure increased by 2,5% y-o-y in local currency terms in 2015, reaching €3,44bn after a similar growth of 2,4% in local currency terms in 2014. Business Monitor International calculates that in the five years between 2015 and 2020, the market is expected to grow modestly at a local currency compound annual growth rate of 3,2% and is forecast to be worth €4,02bn.
