Slovenian industrial companies generate almost a third of total sales and two thirds of total exports. Industry accounts for around 75% of R&D investment in the business sector. In addition, more than a quarter of service activities are tied to industry. The current average value added per employee in the industry is 45,000 EUR.

Industry in Slovenia has been constantly changing over time: from labor-intensive to technology-intensive, from the processing of raw materials to the production of increasingly demanding high-tech products. The wood, the textile and the metallurgical industries were historically important. In the last decades, we can witness a significant increase in the share of industries of higher technology intensity. An intensive transition of the Slovenian firms to industry 4.0 is already expected before the middle of this decade. Large companies have already been forced to digital transformation and to enter the 5G era. For medium-size and small companies this is expected for 2023 or 2024.

The automotive industry, machining and metalworking, electronics, pharmacy and chemicals became dominant industries in Slovenia. On the other side, wood is the main natural resource. Over 60% of territory is under forests. The state promotes investment and development of high value added products in the wood industry. After years of stagnation, the wood processing industry, including wood construction and furniture sector, has been recording positive trends.
